In an area destined by history to viticulture, in 1976 Barboursville Vineyards founders realized the dream that belonged to Thomas Jefferson, the third American president, giving life to a fine vineyard estate. On the slopes of the Soutwest Mountains in central Virginia Blue, which covers an area of 834 acres, 170 of which are vineyards, the estate is widely recognized as having ushered in Virginia's modern winemaking movement. Barboursville Vineyards offers a perfect environment to taste a wide range of current and old vintage flights from the cellar, with seasonal culinary pairings designed by Chef Michael Clough. Palladio is Barboursville Vineyards' fine Italian restaurant where pairing fine wines with the experience of fine Italian cuisine blends with the land where the wines are born.
The Library 1821 is the Tasting Room's premier experience that changes regularly with a diversified exposure to a range of the estate's finest wines. A curated wine collection started in 1997 by Head Winemaker Luca Paschina, is now a vast selection of older distinguished wines available for tasting and purchase. Gourmet foods that pair well with the wines are also available. The Library 1821 is also a repository for selected documents from history, such as the letter by President John Quincy Adams appointing James Barbour to his cabinet as Secretary of War, original household china donated by descendants of the Barbour family, and commendations for the wines.
